| So it's about time I do some updates. Last week was my birthday week. I
tend to not celebrate birthdays on the day in question alone but
through the course of a week, or a month, even. When it comes to
August, the one month lacking a fun calendar holiday, why not stretch
the birthday out a few days? I went to NY, sacrificing some much needed
time with my favorite cookie (you know who you are.) Juri very sweetly
treated me to dinner at a fancy sushi restaurant in Newport, NJ with
some cool dudes from Lehman Bros. I hadn't given hanging out in Newport
a thought until Juri suggested a day out there a month ago. It's a nice
seaport and business district. Juri got me a stylish bag/fragrance
collection and some random Japanese snacks. Thank yee! My day was full
of enjoy. ^^ I also thank everyone who sent me birthday wishes! Aww,
you guys! ^^ For about two days I managed to put together my
costume. I decided to go to Otakon as Yoruichi (former leader of
covert-ops in Soul Society, appears pretty late in the series,
transforms into a cat from time to time) from Bleach (really hugely
popular anime right now omg wow). Yep, I'm a fan of Bleach but it was
Gina who tipped me off to doing Yoruichi. Gina and her friends get
lotsa props for sharing the hotel with me in such short notice. ^^ I
loved putting the cos together and making it work, though for the first
time in my life I bought me some fake hair for the thing. The ride
to Baltimore was long and very ghetto, but I wasn't expecting much as
far as Greyhound is concerned. It was easy to tell which passengers
were the con-goers. Motley bunch of geek-chic types, a few carrying
large bladed cargo-is that a gunblade I see?- and even a couple of guys
who jyan-ken'ed over a seat (They literally said "jyan ken pon and the
whole nine. Gotta love em). Oh, and they were carrying Pocky. But
you must cut the new generation of fanboys and girls some slack. Some
people expect most con-goers to be mostly introverted Comic Book Joe
types. But at this con of upwards of 22,000 people, I saw all types of
people taking part in the festivities. There was a really diverse
population of fans. Even the locals didn't seem too freaked out by us;
many were curious about Otakon and some even wanted to know if they
could get tickets. ( I heard a few complaints about rude Yanks fans
visiting for the game. C'mon now! I'm a Yanks fan! I wish one would
talk some *** to me, I'd bust they ***) I enjoyed all the sorts of
fanservice going on around the con, especially the FFVII AC stuff.
Dancing Sephy's, Clouds just...being Cloud, random battles and all
sorts of wackiness. I saw a Neo (who wouldn't get out of character! Omg
you're at a rave! Quit fighting Agent Smith and DANCE!), Banana with
actual jars of PB & J, too much Naruto (please die already XP) and
masses of shinigami (which on the other hand is never too much of.
Okay, I'm biased.) I saw Matt aka The Russian in a hakama -doing the
shinigami thing with a creative twist- and some crazy boots being a
total anime dork so the circle is complete and I can die peacefully
now. Haha. Wait. That just makes me a bigger dork. The dealers' room
was full of goodies. The fanart was pretty cool. Other things reminded
me of the stores I've seen in Japan, so I got the urge to buy out of my
system. Kinda. I want more keychains. There was also a neat corset
store, again tempting me to shell out some cash on a brocaded tool of
constricting death. But it's so full of pretty.. O_O I wish I had
taken more pictures. I'm so badly coordinated at walking around crowded
areas and following my group so my camerawork was very sub-par
throughout the whole thing. Plus my camera's battery is as weak as all
hell. But I'll manage to wrangle together some more pics of me from
somewhere. Man, I love dressing up.
| Yesterday Dinh and I went out to Chinatown, fairing the random storms. We went to Elizabeth Center Mall, a shopping spot we frequented in HS. I'm glad I saw Dinh, since we haven't really been together and it's been hard to keep in touch. I found out we're going through the sae changes in socializing and friendships since college. We joined the same kids, more annoying reminders of our not-so-past selves, in browsing cute mascot trinkets and cell phone jinglies. We ate at two restaurants, ordering only an appetizer at each. The more upscale, Zagat-acclaimed Malaysian bistro's staff weren't too pleased with this but give us cheap college student selves a break. >_< We also went to a Chinese bakery, where Dinh warned me that certain cakes "may taste Asian" or rather "like Asia"... While I pondered the implications of such a taste we both took the risk and each bought a cake. My tiramisu was fine and delicious, but Dinh's chocolate thing...was salty? And not really chocolatey at all. Sorry Dinh. By the end of the ordeal I was convinced that cake could taste like Asia. All in all, we had our fun.
Juri and I went to Newport in NJ today, hit up the mall and made our way back to Manhattan. Juri's her old fun self, with a taste for sophistication, oh my! It's hard hanging out in NY without spending a hunk of cash, and unless you plan beforehand you're limited to shopping and eating. So apparently the biggest fashion trend is the hipster look. You know, the poseurs of the indie scene who love jersey anything, stripes, and screenprinting. And belts, mind you! I like the look, and I liked the look for a while now. We then went to Astor Place, a street with a lot of Japanese restaurants and stores. I went along as Juri met up with her mom (haven't seen her in a long time!) and aunt, but Juri and I were on our own again after a misunderstanding over dinner plans together. There was lots of chatter mostly in Japanese, with some English, and then really confusingly Juri's aunt and mom would break out in Korean, leaving us going "whaa?" On our way to Koreatown Juri and I saw a bunch of kids, in gothic clothing. But it wasn't quite goth, because of the signature frills and lace and ribbons and...errr, omg we ran into about 30 American Gothic Lolita fans. I thought a Mandarake opened somewhere in NY and they were going to its first GL event. (There's a Uniqlo somewhere on this island already...) It was great and absurd and fun to see all of them at once. The style is emerging in even sexay clothing stores (you know, where you can get all-PVC dresses and 6-inch stripper shoes) where a girl was trying on a little EGL-ish number, and this store that is a mix of indie, punk, and Wa GL style. It's called Saints Lounge (aka Freaks) at 34 1/2 (yes, and a half.) Saint Marks Place. Just in case ya'll wanna go. ^^
All in all, I've had some good wholesome fun.

| I've started work last week, helping out with web design for the college admissions department. Not much else news there, except that I'm familiarizing myself with Adobe Imagemaker, which > all. I should've dabbled around with it sooner, as it's going to take me a while to use competently. Sam modded the old PC our friend Drew graciously gave him and now it can play WoW, or World of Warcraft, an online RPG which many of you may be familiar with as a taker of souls. (and in saying, Drew > all, and we miss you, I have a good excuse to go to Hawaii now whee!) I'm fairly obsessed. Days are very slow here on-off-campus so this will have to suffice as a sort of hobby. I feel an urge to get really creative with my hands or something. My urges have so far included making clothes, dancing, building my own computer, and doing something involving music. I could buy a sewing machine and haul that really large box of material out of campus storage, and go crazy. I'll have to forget about going on a shopping spree at NewEgg, so making a PC is outta the question. As for dance, there'll bhangra lessons on campus starting this week, hooray. And as for music, I can't play crap so um...I'll listen to it. =P Speaking of sewing stuffs, I've been thinking of going to Otakon. Since it's such a huge event, accomodation and registration alone has gotten really expensive. But someone must must be interested in going to Baltimore for some fangirlish craziness, right? | | |
| In case you don't know, I've been living waay off campus--within walking distance, so I'll say relatively, theoretically on campus--with sammy. It's a kooky apartment with 4 rooms and a nice kitchen, tons of kitchenware, but veery little furniture other than some comfy beds. We're really having fun this summer, cooking all manner of vegetarian delicacies. I really like cooking with Sam, though with our combined limited experience of cooking (okay, I'm relatively more noob) some dishes tend to be deliciously repetitive. Sam luves making falafel and naan, and I luv eating it. I got ambitious and brought some Japanese staples here, including a large tub of miso, which I manage to put in everything. Though I'd like to make a full Japanese meal, methink it impossible without a truckload of more ingredients, most of which not-so-veggie-friendly. So far I've made some decent appetizers. So far we've made pad thai, Japanese curry, weeird improv-proto-Thai curry, and I'm sure some other treats but this is making me hungray. Culinary fun aside, life's getting a little rote but I think that shall soon end later this month. Then I'll have more time to actually take a job. A friend from PR's visiting campus, I may grab a ride to NY (still dunno), and more people will be on campus. I also finally have a functioning cellphone so I won't feel too isolated when I'm off-on-campus. Err. It's a Cingular and is supposedly free on calls between other Cingular phones so if you (yes you!) have one, call me! (Ew, I just pimped a phone carrier. I feel dirty.) Oh yes, it was recently Samreen's birthday! For those who know, as you would expect, it was a happy birthday full of fun. Her mom and brother came to see her, which is really really sweet. There were plenty of friends there and we had a good time, getting technically drunk on OJ and cola. It's possible, people. Don't tell me alchie is the only intoxicating thing out there when caffeine and folates can make you curiously hyper-giggly. Whee for hyper-giggles. | | |
| Hi! First of all, I wanna give a happy birthday to Juri! You're cool and wonderful, and I luv you! I am sad I'm missing your birthday right now. Please give your best on your summer job but relax this weekend! I'd also like to give a shoutout to the lucky TA Mr. Matt-Sensei.
Also, I'm back from many months of not posting. I did post several updates on my LJ, and hopefully I've kept in touch with most of you so you know what's up. I'm on campus, studying, hanging out with Sam, and trying to find work, but mostly vegging out. Being up the northern Mass. is a true reverse culture shock for me, as I never was familiar with the small-town white bread American atmosphere. I go into the metropolitan area of the Berkshires pretty often, and it feels like the middle of nowhere. I still like the mountainous little place though. I said bye to all the 06's I missed for graduation. They're really a great bunch of dudes and dudettes. I can't believe that's gonna be me in one year!
